Le spectacle musical Moliere was first presented in Paris in the autumn of 2023 on the stage of the Dôme de Paris. That same year it was recognized as the Best Original Musical in France. Later, it won many other musical awards in its home country. Immediately after the premiere, the artists went on a major tour across France. The production tells the story of the formation of the great playwright and covers the main stages of his biography. The narrative begins with Molière’s youth, when, having refused a prestigious and prosperous position at court, he creates a theatrical troupe together with the woman he loves. This is followed by the first productions and failures, hypocrisy and the intrigues of numerous enemies, conflict with the Church and exile, a revolution carried out in the comedy genre, and the recognition for which the hero paid a high price.

Molière, l’Opéra Urbainthe title speaks for itself, and the production balances at the intersection of genres. It is a synthesis of classic and contemporary, where the 17th century meets the 21st. The urban opera, as the creators call it, is a bold interpretation of the life and work of the great dramatist. Traditional motifs are organically woven into modern stage design and fit perfectly with contemporary musical solutions. Real objects are combined with video projections. On stage, through the efforts of Emmanuelle Favre, a real theater from Molière’s era has been recreated — with boxes and platforms, a heavy curtain and antique chandeliers. At the same time, elements of modern architecture are elegantly integrated into the classical style — an attentive viewer will certainly notice them. The costumes by Jean-Daniel Vuillermoz are also a symbiosis of two eras and a link between them.

Chollat.

The actors wear antique wigs and Baroque-style frock coats, stockings and feathered hats, while at the same time putting on sneakers. The performers chosen to embody Molière’s story on stage are young, beautiful, and charged with vibrant energy. The striking choreography by Romain Rachline Borgeaud perfectly channels youthful temperament into movement. In the production, melodic arias coexist seamlessly with a hard-hitting beat. Musical dialogues in the format of grand opera are supported by an energetic slam: the performers step off the stage, and suddenly the audience becomes part of the action. Dove Attia and Ladislas Chollat created Molière as a declaration of love to the classics, giving it a modern sound and almost documentary precision in recreating the story of their hero’s life. And they gifted the audience with a unique opportunity to look anew at the figure of the great Molière and to discover the relevance of his ideas today.

«Together we wanted the story of Molière’s lifeto resemble his work: timeless, free and bold» say Attia and Chollat.
